During the long weekend that just recently passed, Megan and I went camping. We left Friday afternoon and came
back Monday evening. We camped at Lady Evelyn Falls the first night, and then at Louise Falls the next two nights. Along with those two water falls, we also saw the Twin Falls and McNallie Creek. They are all within about an hour's drive of each other. The area we went to was about a 5-6 hour drive from Yellowknife. So we went hiking a bit to all of these falls. They were so...magnificent. I couldn't believe all the beauty in a single area. I wonder why so many waterfalls exist in such a smal
l corner of the world. So I got a few pictures, and Megan took a bunch with her great camera that takes super amazing pictures. So mine fail next to hers, but they will still give a glimpse of what I saw that weekend. The Twin falls were cool because they were like two perfect cubes beside eachother. When we got to the bottom of Lady Evelyn Falls the first thing we saw was a rainbow at the bottom. Meg got some good pics but my camera didn't capture it.
We saw a bit of wildlife. Not a whole lot but some. Bison are popular around here. They'll just be lying on the side of the highway, eating or sleeping. They're often seen in herds
but most of the ones we saw on this trip were by themself, which Megan tells me is odd. We did see one small herd of about 7 or 8 on the way home. We stopped and took a few pictures of them. We also saw some cranes, which were neat. They exist in this one area up here, a short ways past Yellowknife. We saw maybe 8 or so, two at a time usually. That's it for the m
ost interesting wildlife. There were typical other birds like hawks and magpies, and of course sea gulls, ravens, and canadian geese. It was so sad, we saw a good with a broken leg (we think) in a field. It never moved from it's place and it kept lifting its' leg up.
It was beautiful weather Friday and Saturday, but then Saturday night it poured rain (which wasn't too fun in a tent) and it continued throughout Sunday on and off. It would downpour just long enough to get everything soaked while we quickly put away what we could, and then the sun would come out. So after a few rounds of that we decided to go into Hay River for the afternoon. Of course it was Sunday so most things were closed, but we went to a couple shops and walked around a bit. It was a good way to spend the afternoon. I hear about that town on the radio all the time (same radio station as YK) so it was nice to see what it actually looked like. Monday was sunny out again so we hiked down to the Twin Falls Gorge with the intent to fish at the bottom. So Megan was carrying her camera bag while I brought the fishing rods and my camera. We had to climb down a small rockface at one point. There was a rope attached to a tree at the top that you hang onto to get down. There was a similar one at Lady Evelyn Falls. So we get down as far as we can do, take some pictures, and discover that there's no way we can get all the way down to fish. So it was a nice thought, but it wasn't practical. Good exercise though I suppose. We stopped at a river along the highway for about an hour on the way back to fish. We didn't catch anything but I'm still glad we did it. I don't remember the last time I actually fished. That's kinda bad for living in Hornepayne.
Oh yeah one more thing. We had a squirrel friend visit our campsite at Louise Falls for the majority of our time there. We fed him marshmellows and corn pops. Meg got some pretty great pictures of it too.
So that was our weekend in a nutshell. I had so much fun, and I'm glad Megan suggested going camping. We haven't had much opportunity to do things like that this summer because of the fire. Megan had planned to go fishing and canoeing more and all sorts of stuff. But that's ok. If you want to make God laugh, make plans right? And I can still say I had a fantastic summer here. So that's pretty great!
